Citizen science practices and experiences in monitoring and surveillance of invasive alien species

18.12.2025

On 3 December 2025, our coordinators, Helen Roy and Quentin Goom, took part in an event on participative science in Paris. The event, hosted by the Natural History Museum of Paris, brought together more than 100 practitioners from France and other countries. They engaged in numerous discussions on the perspectives of citizen science, their experience with programmes such as iNaturalist and shared examples of how citizen science initiatives connect people with the natural world and enhance wellbeing.

During the event, Helen Roy discussed citizen science experiences in using invasive alien species surveillance and monitoring, and presented the different schemes and societies used for that. Quentin Groom took part in a session on how new technologies contribute to citizen science and what are some of the risks and opportunities they bring.
