Socio-political action

detection

Recognising that biological invasions result from human activities, OneSTOP integrates socio-political action into its approach. Through Living Labs in five countries, the project provides real-world testing environments for invasive alien species (IAS) detection and management, fostering stakeholder engagement and public participation.

OneSTOP employs culturomics—a novel method for analysing socioeconomic factors influencing IAS. By tracking digital discourse, the project identifies public attitudes and human behaviours driving IAS spread. Leveraging advanced data analytics and ML algorithms, OneSTOP will not only assess perceptions but also predict and help shape behaviours, addressing concerns and misconceptions. By integrating these insights with ecological data, OneSTOP will develop holistic IAS management strategies.

Public perceptions

OneSTOP is analysing public interest and perception of IAS using data from social media and digital sources. Internet salience acts as a proxy for human interest, while sentiment analysis uncovers public attitudes, informing policy and awareness campaigns. Additionally, public surveys across the five Living Labs will assess awareness, attitudes, and acceptance of IAS management strategies. Insights from these efforts will guide effective communication and engagement strategies, fostering informed public support for IAS management.

IAS Regulation

OneSTOP is creating a blueprint to enhance how the IAS Regulation is applied across Europe. This will be based on findings from the project and will go beyond recommendations by actively engaging stakeholders. Interviews with government agencies, conservation groups, and regulators will help identify practical needs and challenges. A dedicated workshop with key organisations like IUCN and EASIN will explore ways to improve IAS reporting and enforcement. The blueprint will also include successful strategies from countries like South Africa and New Zealand, offering practical guidance for strengthening IAS management in the EU.

Global Biodiversity Framework

OneSTOP is supporting the achievement of Target 6 of the Global Biodiversity Framework – to reduce IAS and their impact – by advancing integrated governance for IAS management and policy implementation.

The project will analyse case studies of IAS that require cross-sectoral coordination—spanning trade, environment, agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and health—to mitigate impacts. It will map policy interactions and consequences, as well as assess the integration of research into biosecurity by evaluating how Member States engage with research on biological invasions.

A policy forum—organised alongside renowned international events such as the World Biodiversity Forum—will bring together stakeholders to refine policy briefs from OneSTOP activities, incorporating insights from IPBES Assessments and SBSTTA.
