Talking about the future of biodiversity monitoring and citizen science at BioMonWeek2026

05.06.2026

The first European Conference for Biodiversity Monitoring (BioMonWeek2026) took place from 4–8 May 2026 in Montpellier, France and brought together science, policy, and business communities to exchange monitoring knowledge, build networks, and drive tangible societal impact to help reverse the global biodiversity crisis.

During the event, OneSTOP was presented at a joint booth with BMD and MAMBO, where visitors learned more about the projects and their activities and had the chance to get materials, such as our policy briefs. Moreover, visitors could see some live demonstrations of some of the technologies used in OneSTOP, such as LepiSense.

In addition, OneSTOP contributed to two conference sessions:

  • Policy implementation to bridge the gap from data to action, in which Louise Hendrickx (Meise Botanic Garden) presented our joint policy brief with B-Cubed on plant blindness in the OneHealth framework. During her presentation, Louise showed the audience that plants are essential for biosecurity and that remaining ‘blind’ to them affects food system resilience, ecosystem stability, and microbiome interactions.

  • Monitoring training and experience sharing, where Laura Abraham (Meise Botanic Garden) explained how the five OneSTOP Living Labs help strengthen local and regional capacities to monitor invasive alien species by participatory workshops and continuous feedback, ensuring that tools are accessible, context-appropriate and usable beyond the project lifetime.

BioMonWeek 2026 allowed biodiversity monitoring experts to discuss transnational cooperation and coordination across scales. Since BioMonWeek follows a biennial format, the next event will happen in 2028 in Turku, Finland.
